Whats the vibe?
The Kona might look like it was designed by AI as the car of the future, but for something that looks this designer, it’s surprisingly within reach for many new buyers.
The first time I saw one on the road, I said out loud, “what the f*ck is that?” And look, as someone who loves cars, that’s a pretty notable first impression.
It’s technically a small SUV, but roomy enough that a young family could chuck it on their shortlist and find it ticks enough boxes. It’s bigger than a lot of other “small SUVs”, but the thing about labels is you don’t have to listen to them. Don’t let a category define you, Kona. You do you, you big thing.
It’s a convenient, easy car that nails the futuristic vibe without being too complex. Yes, there’s an electric version, but the petrol and hybrid models are what most people buy, so that’s what we’re talking about here.
It's a looker
Superb fuel economy in the hybrid
Quite practical with a decently big boot
Servicing is expensive
Some interior parts are cheap and hard
N Line looks performance-y but isn't
The current-gen Hyundai Kona has been around for a couple of years now, and it’s one of those cars that started out a bit divisive, design-wise, but in hindsight, it may have just been ahead of its time. While other brands (hi Toyota) are leaning hard into the rugged, off-roady aesthetic, Hyundai’s heading straight for the year 3000.
The Kona’s styling is a big part of the appeal. In a world full of sensible-but-bland small SUVs, this one makes you excited to walk back to your car after dinner. It’s bold, futuristic, and a little weird, in a good way.
Now, it's not exactly budget. But given how much is included, especially in the base model, you won’t feel ripped off. In fact, the base Kona is such a strong package that it makes the jump to the Premium model feel kind of... unnecessary. For an extra $7,000, we'd put that towards a holiday over leather seats.
The hybrid is a great option if you’re keen on fuel savings, but it’ll cost you about $4K more, and at that point, you’re staring directly at the Corolla Cross in terms of price. Still, for those who love the Kona’s vibe, the extra spend might feel justified.
All up, the Kona isn’t the cheapest small SUV out there, but if you want something that stands out and stacks up, it’s hard to beat.
Overall, we would recommend this car if:
You're after a roomier small SUV
You want a car with bold looks
If you want SUV practicality without SUV parking problems
